Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar
This Romantic – Sports movie has it all… College days, friends, love and most of all sports!! The movie shows life in college, where how two groups of people fight for the same girl. As a game of Sports “Cycling” has been added in the major part of the film to keep it going. This movie and its songs are still never boring to watch. The movie did so well at the Box office that the remakes have been made in languages like Bengali, Tamil and Telugu.
Lagaan is an epic Sports – Drama Film. The movie depicts the ancient time of India, when the British used to rule the Country. And the plot of the film revolves around how the people of a small village under a huge Tax burden had to face the British rulers and wager to avoid the taxes; they had to accept a challenge by the British men to play a game of “Cricket”. The film was shot in the nearby locations of Bhuj(Gujarat). It was an Ashutosh Gowariker film, starring Amir Khan, Gracy Singh and British Actors Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne. The film was made on a whooping budget of 250 Million Rupees and did a great job at the box office. Lagaan is the only 3rd Indian movie to get nominated for Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film.
Chak De! India
Chak De India is a movie based on the “Women’s Hockey” Team. Hockey has always been an important sport in India. Shah Rukh Khan being in the lead role plays the character of Kabir Khan who was captain of Indian Hockey team and was accused of betraying the Country after a loss of game with Pakistan, to prove the nation his innocence he joined as a Coach in the Women Hockey Team. SRK’s character has been depicted very well with a strong intend to make the girls work together in a team and motivate them throughout. The movie shows how these girls from all the different parts of the country gets united and plays together one sport for the nation and wins it against Australia in the finals and makes their Coach and the country proud.
Paan Singh Tomar
The film is based on the true story of a “Soldier of the Indian Army” and also an “Athlete”, who won a gold medal at the Indian National Games, but is, forced to become a notorious bandit. The lead role is played by the versatile actor Irrfan Khan. The film was made on a budget of 45 Million. This film has won the Best Feature Film, Best Actor awards.
This is a movie not exactly based on a “Sport” but, it reflects how a major factor in “Cricket” plays role which is “Match Fixing”. The movie shows how a guy, who does nothing for a living, enters into the world of “Match Fixing” and saw a beautiful girl and falls in love!! Nothing known to the girl they get along and what it leads to in the end is something that shows what money can take you to. The lead role played by Emraan Hashmi is splendid. The movie and its songs holds you till the end and is a must watch.
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
Again a Nonfiction Film based on the “Athlete” – Milkha Singh who is known as Flying Sikh worldwide. The film is a biopic of Milkha Singh’s entire life journey from a child who survived the terror of partition of Pakistan and India and lost his family in it and how he grew up as an Athlete. The movie has a strong influence and it is so inspiring that it makes us feel proud to have such great sports person in our Country. The lead role is been played by Farhaan Akhtar and he has done absolute justice to the role. The movie is a must watch.
Kai Po Che!
The movie is inspired by Chetan Bhagat’s book “The 3 Mistakes of My Life”. The name of the movie is pronounced in Gujarati and has a touch of Gujarat with almost all the festivals depicted in the film. The film is based on friendship and cricket, and how the 3 friends and their life changes eventually as the movie go on. The movie has done good at the box office and this one is for those who hate reading books and like to watch a movie instead!!
Mary Kom is one of India’s finest Boxing Players but, inspite of her numerous achievements, she was not a well known name in India. Director Omung Kumar approached her for this film and wanted everyone to know about her and Boxing for Women. The film depicts Mary Kom’s entire journey of becoming a boxer to her victory in World Boxing Championships in Ningbo. The lead role is played by Priyanka Chopra and she has done full justice to the role. Priyanka had to undergo extensive physical training for 3 months and also trained for Mary’s distinct boxing styles. This is an inspiring movie and the Country is proud to have females like her.
This Salman Khan Starrer film depicts the Romantic – Sports drama of how a man from Haryana, Sultan Ali Khan enters into the Wrestling Championship to prove his love. Anushka Sharma who is also in the lead role and a wrestler in the movie ties knot with Salman. But, later Sultan’s successful career creates a rift in his personal life. The movie did great job at the box office and both Salman and Anushka have done justice to their roles.
The most recent release in sports movie of the year is Azhar. Well, the movie is a biopic based on the entire life of former Cricketer and Captain of Indian team Mr. Mohammad Azharuddin. The film depicts about Azharuddin’s life as a “Cricketer”, his love relationships and how he was accused of being engaged into match fixing and how he had to prove the world that he was innocent. The lead role was played by Emraan Hashmi along with Prachi Desai as his first wife and Nargis Fakri as Sangeeta Bijlani. The movie asks for sympathy from the audiences and also gives a new perspective and respect of looking towards this cricketer’s life.
